Santa Claus has clearly given the Indian bourses a miss, as markets continued to trend lower as the year drew to a close. The change in sentiment, much more pronounced in the small-cap and mid-cap space, has hit the green pack like others, with most stocks losing ground today as well. Minor recoveries mounted on the back of order wins or other positive news have rarely allowed stocks to hold on to gains, serving simply to offer weaker hands an exit.
The pessimism seems to have shifted wholesale to manufacturing firms for now, with the cohort seeing the maximum value erosion in the past few months. EPC firms have seemingly hit a bottom, not losing as, much over the past month. But as you can see, the YTD numbers make for a none too pretty picture, which will make many investors question the timing of entering ‘booming’ sectors in India.
Rising prices of inputs like Silver might have had a disproportionate impact on sentiment for now, when there is little doubt that substitutes will find their way into the market sooner rather than later. But from all indications, it does seem that the slope of downward prices could even out, or even begin to rise in 2026, which will make many players relook their plans, profitability, and margins.
Will Q3 numbers save the pack? Wait and watch.
